With the growing impacts of climate change putting the most vulnerable at a heightened risk, the agricultural sector, including smallholder farmers in low-and middle-income countries (LMICs) in particular, finds itself struggling to adapt to these changes. As official development assistance (ODA) is stretched thin across competing health and humanitarian crises, it is essential for smallholder agricultural production in LMICs to receive the adequate funding needed to adapt to the ever-increasing risks posed by climate change.

Our below Summary Sheet highlights core trends in ODA for agricultural adaptation, including top donors and recipients, primary sub-sectors, and channels through which funding is distributed. In addition, we lay out six key takeaways on agricultural adaptation ODA for governments, researchers, and advocates to leverage for expanding the scope of these funding streams. Our Summary Sheet is also available for download.

Additionally, check out the second part of our two-part publication on agricultural adaptation, in partnership with the Ban-ki Moon Centre for Global Citizens and Global Citizen, in which Angela Reithuber, Program Manager – Elevating Agricultural Adaptation with the Ban-ki Moon Centre and Mwandwe Chileshe, Global Policy Lead - Food Security, Nutrition, and Agriculture with Global Citizen provide an in-depth qualitative assessment of the findings in the Summary Sheet, pulling in relevant case studies and action items for supporting increased ODA to agricultural adaptation in the future.
